Kat’s Big Gay Yard
Why did I start Kat’s Big Gay Yard?
A couple years ago, I moved into my almost-dream house. Why almost? Because of our next door neighbors. They are racist, homophobic, obnoxious, loud, and rude. We tried to be good neighbors, but in the spring of 2020, they responded to someone I love by saying, “F**k you, Fa**ot”
I was so angry, but we decided that the only way to respond to such vile hatred was with love. So I reached out to my local community for help making my literal “Big Gay Yard.” Rainbow things began to arrive in the mail – so many my Amazon delivery guy had to use a tote! And so – the Big Gay Yard was born.
Before- the front
This is what the front of my hard looked like before we rainbow’d it up.
Before – the back
This is the view of my back yard, before the rainbow additions. The a**hole neighbor sees this view from his yard.
Rainbow-Palooza!
This is much, but not all, of the haul that the community sent in response to the hate! There was so much I took a slow approach, adding a thing or two every day or two!
First Step – a light
The very first thing I did was put up two rainbows in the window that faces “the neighbor”. The lower one shines day and night!
Sending a Message
This addition was quick, but designed to send a message. -Hate Has No Home Here. Black Lives Matter. Women’s Rights are Human Rights. No Human Is Illegal. Science is Real. Love is Love. Kindness is Everything.
Welcome!
A gift from a friend, we added this to our front step. All Are Welcome Here.
Gnomes
I got a set of rainbow gnomes from someone…here’s one hanging out on a sunflower!
Gnome Love
Even the gnomes know. Love Wins!
More Gnomes!
This guy is just hanging around, representing love!
Banner Up!
Love Always Wins Banner – in our front yard, over our newly planted flowers!
Have I said It Enough?
Another banner – on the side of the garage, facing the neighbor’s garage.
S’more Gnomes!
This flag with gnomes hangs under our kitchen window in the front yard!
Rainbow Chairs!
These I bought myself – and take them with me on picnics too! There’s my Izzy-girl!
Sunny Days bring Rainbows!
I was touched that someone purchased and gifted me with this amazing picnic umbrella! I think it may have been when I put it out that “the neighbor” called the city to complain about our rainbows!
Rainbow Pinwheels
These made me so happy. We were gifted more than a dozen little ones, and then I purchased these amazing big ones. The fill the yard with joy!
Back Yard Love
These metal rainbow hearts are the bomb! I love them so much. I sometimes use them for events also!
We got inspired!
With all the fun rainbows, my partner decided to paint our berry bush trellises!
Rose Trellis Too
And a trellis for the front yard too! We have gorgeous roses!
My inspiration
My partner had made a little Cactusville for the yard – I added the rainbow rocks to help celebrate PRIDE!
Neighbors Notice
As we added rainbows to our yard, we began noticing neighbors walk by and smile. Some began to comment how nice the yard was or how much they loved our love! I saw folks appreciate the messages.
A door to where?
This cute fairy door sits on my tree when the weather is nice. Isn’t it cute?
Rainbows at Night
Another amazing gift from the community – solar lights for the yard that rotate rainbow colors!
More Night Time
Here you can see how BRIGHT “the neighbors” light is that shines in our house. We love our night lights though!
RIP RBG
I had to add this to the front yard! RIP RBG!
